Korean Food at COEX: Hearty Sotbap at Sotnaeum (B1)

Everyone comes to COEX for the Starfield Library and the aquarium — but when you want an actual, sit-down Korean meal in the middle of all that, the options aren’t obvious. For proper Korean food at COEX, Sotnaeum is my pick: individual pots of freshly cooked sotbap (Korean pot rice), hearty enough to reset you after a day of walking the mall.

What is sotbap?

Sotbap is rice cooked to order in its own small iron pot, served steaming and topped with something good — eel, salmon, seafood, meat. It’s the wholesome, proper-meal end of Korean food, and it comes with a lovely ritual at the end (scraping the toasty scorched rice, nurungji, and turning it into a nutty rice tea). If you want the full step-by-step, I’ve explained it in my guide to Sotnaeum’s Insadong branch — same chain, same ritual.

Finding it

Sotnaeum is on B1 of Starfield COEX Mall, connected directly to Bongeunsa Station Exit 7 (Line 9) — walk in toward the aquarium and Megabox and you’ll spot the glass-walled storefront. Since it’s inside the mall, it’s a perfect escape from the summer heat or a rainy afternoon.

The menu

There’s a wide sotbap lineup — eel, salmon (salmon-jang), seafood-jang, steak, spicy octopus, and a mala line — so there’s plenty to choose from. The menu has English labels with photos, which makes choosing easy; COEX gets a lot of international visitors, so ordering and paying is genuinely straightforward. Cards accepted.

We went with the eel sotbap and the salmon-jang sotbap.

Eel sotbap (19,900 KRW)

Lift the lid and the savory aroma hits before you’ve even tasted it. The eel is thicker than expected, clean-tasting with no fishiness, and mixed into the rice with the soy-based sauce it disappears fast. A really satisfying bowl.

Salmon-jang sotbap (16,900 KRW)

A popular pick here, and it’s easy to see why: tender salmon in a savory-sweet soy marinade, the kind of thing Koreans call a bap-doduk (“rice thief”) because it makes you keep eating. It’s not just salty — there’s a gentle sweetness that keeps it moreish.

If I’m being picky, the seasoning was a touch strong for me and the accompanying soup arrived a little small and not piping hot — small things, and honestly it was still delicious.

Don’t skip the finish

Whatever you order, scrape the crisp layer of scorched rice at the bottom of the pot, add the hot water provided, and let it turn into sungnyung — a toasty, comforting rice tea. Korean sotbap has no greasy heaviness, and finishing this way leaves you full but comfortable.
