A Quiet Cafe in COEX: Stem Coffee, a Spacious Hidden Hideout

Anyone who’s been to COEX on a weekend knows the problem: it’s packed, it’s loud, and every cafe has you squeezed elbow-to-elbow. So the first time I found Stem Coffee — a big, genuinely quiet cafe tucked below the cinema — it felt like a secret. If you want a calm spot to sit and talk in Seoul’s busiest mall, this is my pick for a quiet cafe in COEX.

Exploring the mall itself? Here’s my guide to the (best things to do at COEX).

A hidden hideout below the cinema

Stem Coffee is on basement level 2 of COEX, by the Megabox cinema, and the layout is part of the charm: a small, cave-like entrance opens into a surprisingly large interior, so it feels like a hidden hideout. I’ve been to COEX countless times and had no idea a cafe this big and this calm was down here.

The space is genuinely roomy, with tables set far apart — a real contrast to the other COEX cafes where you’re usually packed in tight. There’s a mix of seating too: sofa seats, bar tables, even meeting rooms, so it works whether you’re catching up with someone or settling in to work.

The food and drinks

The bakery is small but nice — financiers, scones, croissants, and a few cookies — alongside sandwiches, salads, and a decent range of cakes if you want something more substantial.

On the drinks side, you choose from three types of coffee beans, and there’s a full range of coffee drinks plus a good selection of teas. Two I tried:

  • Ginseng lemon tea (around ₩5,800) — rich, tangy and sweet; perfect when I was fighting off a cold.
  • Citron (yuja) chamomile tea (around ₩4,800) — a gentle, fragrant chamomile, served tall.

Prices are subject to change, so check the current menu in-store; there’s English on the menu.

Which COEX cafe is right for you?

COEX actually has a few good cafes, and they each do something different, so pick by what you’re after:

  • Quiet and spacious — Stem Coffee (you’re reading it).
  • Serious specialty coffee — Terarosa, with nine kinds of hand-drip.
  • Dessert in a big cafe — Soul Market, the spot for something sweet.

How to find it

  • Location: basement level 2 of COEX, right by the Megabox cinema. (Google Maps)
  • Nearest station: Bongeunsa Station (Line 9), Exit 7 — the cafe is just a couple of meters from the exit inside the mall. Samseong Station (Line 2) also connects into COEX.
  • Hours: daily 09:00–22:00 (last order 21:30).
  • Payment: cards accepted; menu has English.

Verdict

COEX is one of the busiest, loudest places in Seoul, so finding a quiet cafe in COEX this spacious feels like a small win. Head down to basement level 2 by the Megabox, settle into a sofa or a bar seat, and enjoy a calm coffee or tea away from the crowds. Making a day of the mall?
