Looking at the sea is one thing. Pedaling a bike out over it, on a cable with nothing but blue water below, is another. That’s the sky bike in Gangneung — a spot called Aranaby near Namhangjin Beach, and it’s one of the most memorable little things you can add to a Gangneung day. I fit it in right after the coffee cafes at Anmok, and I’d tell any visitor to do the same. Here’s my full (Gangneung day trip guide) if you’re planning the wider day.

What is Aranaby?
Aranaby sits by Namhangjin Beach, about a 10-minute walk from Anmok Coffee Street — you’ll spot the tall tower from a distance. There are two rides: the sky bike (하늘자전거), where you pedal a bike along a cable out over the sea and back, and the Aranaby zipline (짚라인), a straight zipline instead of pedaling. The sky bike is the signature one, and the reason most people come.

Prices, hours & who can ride
Prices are per person, round trip (a fixed ~600m out-and-back — no one-way option), same fare for adults and kids:
- Sky bike: ₩29,000 · Zipline: ₩20,000 · Package (both): ₩40,000
You buy tickets on-site at the booth — there’s no online booking, so just turn up and pay (card is fine). Weekends and holidays can mean a long wait, so go earlier.
- Hours: 10:00–18:00, midday break around 12:00–13:00 (Mondays shorter, ~12:00–16:30, sky bike only). Closed in rain, strong wind, or typhoons, so check the forecast.
- Limits: sky bike riders must be 130cm+ and under 120kg; zipline under 130kg.
- Address: near Namhangjin Beach, Gangneung (Google Maps)
Good to know before you ride
You’ll sign a quick safety waiver, then staff fit you with a helmet and harness. A few things worth knowing going in:
- Stow everything in a locker — loose items aren’t allowed on the ride, and staff aren’t responsible for lost belongings.
- Don’t brake or bounce the seat mid-ride — it can derail the bike, so just pedal smoothly.
- One rider per bike, and it’s always round trip (no one-way, no refunds). Lean your weight forward to make the uphill stretch easier, and expect the wind direction to change how hard you pedal.

The ride itself
You climb the tower to start, and the view opens up with every level — by the top, the sea and river stretch out in front of you, worth the climb on its own. Staff give a quick briefing, lock your bike in place, and you’re off.

The tower looks high and the start is a little nerve-wracking, but once you’re clipped in and pedaling, the fear drops away. The first stretch is downhill so the bike glides on its own; the way back is uphill, so you’ll put in a bit of work. The whole round trip takes about 10 minutes — with the sea breeze and the water below, it’s simple, out-of-the-ordinary fun.

The one honest downside: it’s over quickly — actual riding time is under 10 minutes, so adjust expectations if you want something long. But for what it is, pedaling through the air over the East Sea, it’s genuinely special.
Verdict
The sky bike in Gangneung is a small thrill that punches above its short run time — climb the tower, clip in, and pedal out over the sea with the wind in your face. Pair it with the coffee street next door and a beach afterward for a full, easy day on the east coast. Here’s how it all fits together: my (local’s guide to a Gangneung day trip from Seoul).
