Bulgogi at COEX: Sweet-Savory Korean Beef at Sariwon (B1)

If there’s one Korean dish that wins over almost everyone, it’s bulgogi — thin beef in a sweet-savory soy marinade, and about as approachable as Korean food gets. For bulgogi at COEX, Sariwon on B1 of Starfield COEX Mall is a dependable, comfortable choice, and it’s a nationwide chain that knows exactly what it’s doing.

What is bulgogi?

Bulgogi (“fire meat”) is marinated beef, sliced thin and cooked in a soy-based sauce that’s gently sweet rather than spicy — which makes it a perfect first Korean meal if you’re wary of chili. At Sariwon it comes several ways, and the two most relevant for visitors are:

  • Bulgogi-mushroom casserole (jeongol) — the “wet” version, cooked at your table in a savory broth with a generous pile of mushrooms
  • Old-style broth bulgogi — the classic, closest to what most people picture as bulgogi

There’s also bassak bulgogi (thin slices grilled dry over direct heat), marinated galbi, and a bulgogi ssambap set. My pick: the bulgogi-mushroom casserole — the light, simmering broth makes it especially satisfying.

What I ordered: bulgogi-mushroom casserole (22,000 KRW)

It arrives raw at the table, heaped with beef and — the highlight — a serious quantity of mushrooms. As it simmers, the broth turns deeply savory-sweet.

Once it’s cooked through, a staff member comes over and cuts everything to size for you — no guessing, no fuss. If you love the springy bite of mushrooms, this one’s a joy; and that sweet-savory sauce over rice is genuinely dangerous — you’ll keep going back for more.

The menu & sets

The lineup: old-style broth bulgogi (20,000 KRW), bulgogi-mushroom casserole (22,000), bassak bulgogi (23,000), plus marinated galbi, Sariwon bulgogi, and a bulgogi ssambap set.

Several of the bulgogis — old-style, bassak, Sariwon, and galbi — can be ordered as a set, which adds your choice of one: cold mul-naengmyeon, spicy bibim-naengmyeon, or doenjang stew. If you want a set, the old-style broth bulgogi set is the one I’d get. Otherwise, go straight for the mushroom casserole.

The menu has photos with small English labels (the casserole is listed as “Bulgogi Mushroom Casserole”), so ordering is manageable. Cards accepted.

Details & tips

  • Location: B1, Starfield COEX Mall, 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu — the same floor as Sotnaeum, so it’s easy to pair on a COEX visit (Google Maps)
  • Hours: 11:00am–9:20pm daily, no break time
  • Ordering: photo menu with English labels; cards accepted
  • Waiting: it can have a short queue, but the dining room is large so tables turn over fast — I waited about 5 minutes.

Verdict

For approachable, crowd-pleasing bulgogi at COEX, Sariwon delivers: that sweet-savory marinade, a mushroom-loaded casserole cooked and cut for you at the table, and a room big enough that you rarely wait long. It’s an easy, comforting meal in the middle of a COEX day — though a meat-heavy one, so if someone in your group is vegan, Plantude is on the same floor and you can split up and both eat well. Come hungry and don’t be surprised if you clear the whole pot.
