Sleeping in a hanok — a traditional Korean tiled-roof house — is part of doing Gyeongju right. The catch is that many of the prettiest hanok stays sit out in the countryside, which is lovely if you’re driving and a hassle if you’re not. The hanok itself
You enter through a blue gate in the alley, then the hanok’s own front door (you’re given a passcode). Inside is a small traditional courtyard with the rooms arranged around it — a genuinely atmospheric bit of old Korea.
The rooms pull off the trick you want from a modern hanok stay: traditional mood, modern convenience. I stayed in Baengnyeon, the largest of the double rooms (sleeps up to 3; base 2, +20,000 KRW per extra person). Seorastay has three double rooms in total, plus two private houses for bigger groups — one sleeping 4 (max 5) and one sleeping 6 (max 7), so it works for couples and families alike. I arrived around 6pm to a room already warm — they’d turned the ondol floor heating on ahead of time — and, tucked at the end beside the common area, it was completely quiet at night.
Everything was spotless: fresh, fluffy bedding, a genuinely comfortable bed, and a very clean bathroom. Nice touches included a Dyson hair dryer, a mirror, and phone chargers in every cable type in the drawer.
One honest heads-up for winter travelers: the rooms are heated, but spaces without dedicated heating (like the bathroom) can get chilly — that’s the nature of a traditional hanok. Pack accordingly if you’re visiting in the cold months; it’s a small trade-off for the experience.
Breakfast & the shared dining room
There’s a shared dining room where a simple breakfast is served — toast, coffee, tea, milk, and yogurt — with each room assigned a time slot, so mind your window. Your breakfast milk and yogurt sit in labeled baskets in the fridge; just grab yours.
Outside breakfast hours it doubles as a self-serve kitchen — fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, capsule coffee machine, water purifier, and dishware — open until about 10pm as a courtesy quiet-time cutoff. It’s the perfect spot to bring back snacks from Hwangnidan-gil and have a relaxed drink before bed.

Verdict
Seorastay is the sweet spot for a first hanok night in Gyeongju: authentic enough to feel special, modern enough to be comfortable, and positioned so perfectly that you can do the whole city on foot.
