Matcha Gelato in Gyeongju: Nok-a, a Hanok Cafe on Hwangnidan-gil

Matcha lovers, this one’s for you. Nok-a is a hanok cafe on Gyeongju’s Hwangnidan-gil built around one thing: green tea gelato, made in four intensity levels from mild to almost jet-black. For matcha gelato in Gyeongju — enjoyed in a beautiful traditional hanok — this is the place, and it’s a perfect dessert stop after lunch on the street.

The concept: matcha, dialed up

The name says it: nok (green tea) + a (from ice cream). Green tea gelato is the specialty, and the fun is that you choose your intensity:

  • Level 1 — a mild, familiar green-tea ice cream flavor
  • Level 4 — so intense it’s green to the point of looking almost black, seriously bitter

My pick is the mid-level: more matcha punch than a normal green-tea ice cream, but still with the sweetness and creaminess of gelato. Level 1 tastes ordinary; Level 4 can be too bitter for some — though committed matcha fans love it. Try a few if you’re with friends.

Beyond matcha, the gelato flavors rotate through the usual suspects and some Korean ones: black sesame, Lotus, plain milk, yogurt, hardtack, apple-mango sorbet, choco-milk, mint-choc, cookies-and-cream, strawberry sorbet and more. The black sesame and yogurt are standouts.

What to order

The menu has English labels (cards accepted). Ways to get your gelato:

  • Single cup (1 flavor) — 4,500 KRW
  • Double cup (2 flavors) — 5,500 KRW
  • To-go boxes for bigger groups — S (2 flavors, ~12,000), M (3 flavors, ~17,000), L (3 flavors)

There’s more than scoops, too: gelato lattes, gelato croffles, “gelpocato” (gelato affogato), and matcha bingsu (shaved ice). The signature drink is the matcha gelato latte, and there are other gelato-topped signatures like a Daereungwon gelatte. Regular coffee, ades and teas round out the menu.

The setting

Nok-a is a lovely hanok — tiled roofs meeting blue sky, big windows looking out over the neighborhood’s rooftops. A note on the layout:

  • First floor has the counter and only a few tables; it gets a bit crowded.
  • Second floor is roomier with more seating and the best views — but it’s a no-kids zone. Families with children can use the first floor.

The second-floor window seats, looking out over the tiled roofs, are the ones to aim for.
