Gyeongju’s Hwangnidan-gil is as much a cafe street as a food street, and after a morning of tombs and temples, a pretty Gyeongju cafe to rest in is exactly what you want. Olivee is one of the loveliest — a big, light-filled hanok with a garden terrace, Instagram-famous for good reason, and an easy place to slow down for a coffee and a sweet.
The setting
Olivee is a large hanok cafe, and light is the whole point. Big glass windows run through the space — some seats even sit under a glass ceiling — so sunshine pours in and the whole place feels warm and open. There’s a courtyard terrace that’s gorgeous in good weather, blankets by the entrance to borrow, and photo corners everywhere (this is a place people come to photograph as much as to drink).
One thing to know: there’s a one-drink-per-person minimum, and a small separate building beside the main hall is a no-kids zone — but the main hall is fine for families with children.
What to order
The menu has English labels (cards accepted), and it’s grown well beyond just coffee.
- Vanilla cream latte — the current signature: espresso under a soft cap of vanilla cream. This is the one to get.
- Coffee & non-coffee — americano, cafe latte, hazelnut latte, affogato, chocolate latte, plum ade, grapefruit ade, fruit iced teas, and a scoop of Sangha-mokjang ice cream.
- Tea — peach oolong, honey grapefruit, French earl grey, chamomile, royal grape fruit.
Souffle pancakes (for two, from 11:00am)
Olivee also does souffle pancakes, ordered for two and taking about 20–30 minutes to make — so plan for a proper sit-down. The flavors: injeolmi (14,000 KRW), strawberry (16,000, seasonal), and tiramisu (15,000). The injeolmi version is the interesting one for visitors — topped with nutty soybean powder, crushed almonds and injeolmi rice cake, it’s a genuinely Korean take on the fluffy Japanese-style souffle pancake. (I haven’t tried them myself, but they’re a signature of the current menu.)
The bakery
There’s a bakery counter too — financiers, butter and chocolate scones, and cake slices like basque cheesecake — good if you just want something small with your coffee.
A note on the menu
Olivee changes its lineup over time. On my visit the standout was an ice-cream coffee — a lightly acidic coffee with soft, sweet ice cream melting into it — paired with a shine-muscat iced tea. Both were lovely, but the menu has since moved on (the vanilla cream latte is the signature now), so treat the current menu above as your guide and check the latest in person.

Verdict
For a Gyeongju cafe that captures the charm of Hwangnidan-gil, Olivee is hard to beat: a sunlit hanok, a garden terrace, a good vanilla cream latte and a proper dessert menu to linger over. Come after a meal at Cheongonchae or Sook, settle into a sunny seat, and take a break before the rest of your Gyeongju day.
